Helmet/gimbal camera choices

    With our upcoming Graham Jarvis School, I've decided it's time to upgrade my old Drift hd170 to something newer with an external mic.

    I've looked at the Drift 4k which has some nice features, but for the life of me I can't find a handheld gimbal that will work with it. I can get dealer pricing on this model for just under $250, but without a gimbal available I'm not sure it's worth it.



    One really nice feature of the Ghost4k is the remote that allows you to film contiuously but only captures when you press the button. Meaning it will keep X amount of seconds before and after the press. I see this as being very usefull for editing. instead of wading through hours of footage to find the few moments I want to keep, I'll have them allready pre clipped on my sd card...This is a big selling point for me. Plus I like the live stream to your phone, not that I would use it for much more than making sure the camera angle is good, but it's a nice feature.

    I'm not familiar with the newer GoPro's Hero or Session lineup, but there seems to be a wide array of Gimbals available for them.

    I would like here from everyone on what their favorite camera/gimbal setup is and why?

    Nice find, I never thought about a generic gimbal because I though they would be hard to balance. I was only looking at the gimbals made to work specifically with the GoPro cameras, since they come setup and ready to go for a specific camera. But this may work just fine once balanced.

    Drift makes a really good camera, they just don't have the marketing budget that GoPro does!

    I run a GoPro Session under visor in an aftermarket alloy frame that attaches to a GoPro mount/gimble. External lipstick battery with short USB cable runs it till the 32G card is full if I need it. From what I've seen Jarvis runs a similar setup or at least used to. The Session is not the most technically advanced, but the most likely to survive, and under visor you never know its there. From racing the NE24 the last three years we have seen every helmet cam and light mount setup you can imagine, good and bad. If its not under visor or tucked in tight it will end up on the trail. Of course, for this special event, that will most likely be in an open area, anything will work as long as its crash proof.

    I agree about camera location, that's why I liked the drift in the past, even though it's off the side of my helmet, it's pretty tucked in and has nevery been ripped off the helmet. The session looks decent and GoPro has the widest array of aftermarket accessories available. The BIG selling point for me is the button to press to save X amount of footage before and after the press. I have having to wade through hours of footage to just get a few clips. Maybe GoPro does something similar and I'm just not aware?

    That pre and post trigger footage is something different, don't believe GoPro does that. Seems like it might be useful to capture pre and post data relative to an expected event, or to keep clips the same length, but you would have to program adequate time or you miss part of it. With the GoPro it stays ON, and you just toggle the REC button. To me a PIA, with gloves especially, and sometimes don't hear the "beep" so not sure if you did it or not. I just let it roll, minus the dead time, and cut it up later. Do you rough cut with something like Mpeg Streamclip to narrow things down before bringing it into the editor?

    well, on my old drift, it's just like the GoPro, but has a remote and you can hear the beep. the new one has a remote that works just like the old one (record all the time) and also has the mode where you can capture before and after the press of the button. So If you are riding behind me and cartwheel off a cliff, you simply hit the button and you get the footage "X" amount of seconds before and after, if you want to keep recording just keep hitting the button every so often, or switch to full time mode.

    Jimmy told me his GP has something similar that is supposed to mark the clips, but he could never figure our how to use it, so he has to offload everything to the computer and then sift through the footage, but he really doesn't do any editing, he's just saving for historical purposes.

    I've always just pulled into adobe premier, never tried anything else?

    I have the first Session, which I believe is like a Hero 4 in a small case. I'll check but don't remember that feature, I could be wrong though. The Session being designed so small to fit more places moves control from hardware buttons to the remote or your iPhone. I use the phone to set the angle and that's it, start and stop with the button. I guess it just depends on whether you want to control your content by switching the camera ON/OFF, or do it post process. I just don't like messing with it riding. For what we are going to do, assuming a more static location, a basic digital cam on a tripod may be good.

    I use a Mac, but Mpeg Streamclip is a free app for PC as well. Its a good tool for rough cut and transcoding. Open file, scroll through and set markers, and trim the rest. For encoding I use Handbrake and set up a que to run at night. Just finished a big home video project from old 8mm (analog) tapes, digitized in a Digital 8 Sony cam connected to a MAC, trimmed, edited, encoded, and saved to NAS. 100s of Gs worth! Next up is wreck diving video library.

    I think it's more useful for capturing "unexpected" events, like when you are rolling along and you look to the left and there is a bear right next to you....simply hit the button and keep going....or when clear a tough obstacle and think damn that was good...press the button....when you get back home the clips are waiting for you...you don't have to look through all the footage to find those few seconds of good shots! For "expected" events I would just switch to full time record mode.



    I'm still undecided on the new camera, for the time being I bought Zhiyun smooth-q gimbal for smart phones so I can capture steady footage with my iphone when off the bike. @ $139 it's pretty decent.

    For that to be a useful tool the button would have to be very easy to access and push with gloves, where you have it mounted, and also some type of annunciation provided. GoPro is not that great in this respect when mounted under visor, why I just let it roll.

    If it has a small remote, perhaps it could be bar mounted near the grip?
